Bendigo Health saves energy with Save-It-Easy® & Light Eco®

The City of Greater Bendigo is one of Victoria’s largest and most progressive regional municipalities with a population of over 94,600 people. Located in the exact geographic centre of Victoria, only 90 minutes from Melbourne, Bendigo is a modern, thriving city with a bustling local economy featuring a mild climate.

Bendigo Health is a major health service provider with a staff of almost 3000, and a catchment area one-quarter the size of the state of Victoria comprising over 300,000 people, with one in four members of the community using their services each year. A 672 bed multi-disciplinary service, Bendigo Health incorporates medical, surgical, rehabilitation, psychiatric care, aged care, ambulatory and community services.

When Liz Hayward Project Engineer with Bendigo Health's Engineering Department called Ilum-a-lite in Sydney, she was looking for additional information on something she had seen in a publication called Public Works Engineering. "Ilum-a-lite in Sydney put me on to their representatives in Melbourne, Terry and Joe".  I saw the information on Save-It-Easy and wanted to investigate it further - so Terry and Joe came out to Bendigo and talked to me about the product", Liz said.

After touring different areas of the hospital and outlining different energy saving strategies, a number of recommendations were made to help both reduce lighting energy consumption throughout the hospital, whilst improving light levels in a few areas. The key findings showed that the hospital was positioned to enjoy some fairly substantial energy savings, improve lighting quality and standardise to new technology lighting with all the benefits it brings.

The Case Study for Bendigo Hospital is available here and the following savings and initiatives are highlighted in this work:

Hallways and corridors

achieved a saving of over 30%

Medical Records

achieved a saving of over 60%

Reception areas & offices

achieved a saving of over 40%

Some of the key outcomes of the lighting upgrade were:

  • 65Watt T12 Fluorescent lamps replaced with half as many 35Watt T5 electronic fluorescent lamps

  • 40Watt & 36Watt T8 Fluorescent lamps replaced with 28Watt T5 electronic fluorescent lamps

  • Corridors had only half the lights on as light levels met the standard

  • Average temperatures immediately around the lamps dropped by 8 degrees Celsius - significantly reducing air conditioning loads

  • Delamping of up to 50% occurred in some areas - especially where old technology lamps had been installed and rarely replaced

  • Light lux levels improved throughout the hospital where lighting was upgraded to T5 electronic lamps.

The project is on-going as lamps are progressively upgraded - an update on progress will be provided.
