Victoria - Bendigo

Bendigo Health

With a staff of almost 3000, and with a catchment area of one-quarter of Victoria, Bendigo Health is one of the state's major health service providers. A 672 bed multi-disciplinary service, Bendigo Health incorporates medical, surgical, rehabilitation, psychiatric care, aged care, ambulatory and community services. Liz Haywood is a Project Engineer at Bendigo Health Hospital in Bendigo, Victoria.

Ms Haywood called Ilum-a-lite to see if we could provide her with options on how to reduce the energy used in lighting at Bendigo Hospital. The Hospital used a combination of the Light Eco® and Save-It-Easy® solutions and in conjunction with delamping, made significant savings in all areas - see the Bendigo Case Study for more information.

The energy savings calculated include savings on: delamping, use of latest technology lower wattage electronic lamps for similar lumen output and the energy saved by using the magnetic ballast only as a connecting device within the luminaire's circuit. Whilst the project continues to progress, Ms Haywood was able to demonstrate the Engineering department's commitment to energy savings during the annual Christmas appeal and has been an enthusiastic supporter of our energy saving products ever since!

Luminaire edges cut out to fit Save-It-Easy® T5 adaptors

into older style T8 fittings - other customers with similar fittings found bending the luminaire edges also worked well. Each luminaire fitted with 2x36W T8 lamps & upgraded to 2x28W T5 lamps - energy saving achieved >30%

Alternating luminaire sides

de-lamped. This delamping method is especially effective where luminaires are closely positioned together. Each luminaire fitted with 2x58Watt T12 lamps & upgraded to 1x35W T5 lamp - energy saving achieved >60%.

T5 lamps & Save-It-Easy®

T5 retrofit adaptors installed into old luminaires with diffusers fitted - this picture taken after de-lamping had been completed by the hospital. Each luminaire fitted with 2x36W T8 lamps & upgraded to 1x28W T5 lamps - energy saving achieved >50%

A good example of delamping where every second luminaire in a hallway has both lamps removed i.e. 100% de-lamping. Hospital staff determined that light levels were well within the Australian Standard even with every second luminaire

de-lamped. Energy savings achieved >50%

Office areas were similarly

de-lamped  with each luminaire fitted with 2x36W T8 lamps & upgraded to 1x28W T5 lamps - energy saving achieved >50%

No de-lamping for main Reception area - full lighting levels maintained and energy saving achieved >30%
